Properties: Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminum silicate with sulfur, chlorine and hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of Pyrite and White Calcite. Its hardness is 5 to 6 and its crystal system is isometric, mostly aggregate.
Meaning: The name of Lapiz Lazuli is composed from 'lapis', the Latin word for stone, and 'azula', which comes from the Arabic and means blue.
Color: It is an opaque, deep blue gemstone often containing golden inclusions and whitish marble veins.
Source: The best raw stones come from the steep mountains in the north-east of Afghanistan.
Birthstone: It is the traditional birthstone for December and the accepted gem for the seventh and ninth wedding anniversary. It is the planetary stone for Capricorn and the zodiac stone for Libra.
