Onyx is a variety of Chalcedony, a member of the Quartz family with a hardness of 7. Its crystal system is hexagonal (trigonal). Onyx is defined as a banded chalcedony in which the lines of banding are parallel. Black Onyx is often made by dying gray chalcedony in various ways.
Meaning: Onyx comes through Latin, from the Greek, meaning "claw" or "fingernail". With its flesh tone color, onyx can be said to resemble a fingernail.
Color: Onyx comes in many colors, each caused by an impurity within a base of Quartz. The main properties of Onyx can be inferred from its color.
