To create our bags we work with two brothers in India called Pinu and Manish who we visit every year. Pinu and Manish share responsibility such as sourcing materials, distributing the work between the communities, paying tailors and managing production.

Our Carnival Collection is made from recycled leather and cotton that has been wasted by factories within a 140km radius of where the bags are made. If not collected, this leather could otherwise end up in landfill. The brothers travel around making arrangements with the owners, offering to pay for the wasted scraps and end of roll material. Most of them are wealthy, busy business owners and it is a great challenge reaching them in order to make any arrangements.

We have 60 families (just over 100 tailors) producing the bags for us. They live in small communities within a 60km radius of the brothers home. Many of the tailors are ex shoe makers that lost their jobs in the trade shift to China. All tailors are paid a fair commission with living wage realistically achievable within normal working hours, they work from home and have complete working flexibility. Flexible work is great for them as it means they can work around other commitments such as university or parenting.

The machinery, tools and electricity (when used) is all supplied to them by Pinu and Manish.

We do not use any child, elderly or forced labour. Workers set their own deadlines for what they can produce, meaning no pressure is put on them to meet our deadlines. We also keep work availability consistent by building up stock during quiet times.

Choto is the master tailor for this operation, he trains fellow tailors, creates our templates and turn our designs into reality. Chotu has had a life long career as a tailor.

We try to use every scrap of leather, and any leftovers are sold on to a small jewellery making company to minimise waste.

Selling through Discovered creates more income for artisans. They can set the price they want to receive for the products themselves. By cutting out all middlemen, artisans receive at least 20% more for their products. This is what we call fairer trade.
Discovered is dedicated to creating positive impact. Not all artisans work alone. Sometimes they work in groups or collectives, are helped by not for profit organizations or work for social businesses. We select our partners to ensure more artisans have work make at least 10% above average wage.
We are committed to crafts. We encourage artisans to make products using traditional crafts and techniques. Making products mainly by hand or with easy accessible tools or common available machines. We believe this is important to keep alive.
We love handmade. We also feel strongly about preserving the world we live in. That’s why we work with our partners & artisans to stimulate using local materials and natural resources, and paying special attention to packaging & shipping.

Poor quality

Although the bag looked well made the stitching came apart quite quickly and the strap was too loose for me to be able to use the bag. Certainly not worth the money.
